Origin

Ajwa dates ( عجوة , also known as Ajwah or Ajva) are grown in the city of Medina, Saudi Arabia. The city is known for producing the best dates in the world.

Dates contain nutrients like potassium and trace elements including magnesium, selenium and zinc.

Dry or soft (wet) dates are normally eaten out-of-hand. Dates can be chopped and used in sweet dishes, however we have many other varieties which are slightly firmer and better suited for that since Ajwa is soft. Ajwa is best when it is eaten as-is, it has a rich, smooth texture.

Lesser varieties are used for syrups, pastes and even vinegar! Derived products are used in things like Date nut bread or as toppings for other desserts. Recent innovations include dates cut in cubes, chocolate covered dates or dates stuffed with nuts. Things such as puddings and ka’ak (Arab cookies) using dates are popular. Muslims value this date since it is grown in one of the two Holy Cities of Islam and there is evidence that the Prophet (PBUH) recommended eating these dates to improve health.

Dates are not only used in the Middle East. For example Britain uses chopped dates for dessert recipes such as sticky toffee pudding, Christmas pudding and Date and walnut loaf. In Southeast Spain they even eat fried dates!
